Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism Spectrum Disorder or ASD is a neurodevelopment disorder defined by two core behavioral dimensions. The first is a persistent deficit/difficulty in social communication/interaction. The second core aspect is a restricted and/or repetitive patterns of behavior, interest, or activities.

1. Talk to your pediatrician about milestones and behaviors. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends screening at 18 and 24 months.

2. If screening comes back with any red flags a referral to a child development specialist might be given.

1. Talk to your pediatrician about milestones and behaviors. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends screening at 18 and 24 months.

2. If screening comes back with any red flags a referral to a child development specialist might be given.

3. Developmental pediatricians, child psychologists, or child psychiatrists are all specialist that might be involved in the final diagnoses. The final screening will be done through observing the child, asking about behaviors, and sometimes using standardized diagnostic tools like a test.

1. Use picture cards to outline the day and activities in order to help with transitions

2. Break down complex tasks into smaller steps to prevent the feeling of being overwhelmed.

3. Create a low sensory area. This is a place with low/warm light, no background noise, and a soft weighted blanket.

4. Applied Behavioral Analysis, Speech-Langua
